About Roodepoort Johannesburg
Roodepoort was an independent municipality in South Africa, until it was absorbed by Johannesburg during the latter half of the 1990’s. Gold was discovered in the area in 1884, and a small town began to develop, despite the failure of the goldmine. In 1904, Roodepoort was officially founded as a municipality from the community that had grown up around the mine. After incorporating several surrounding towns, Roodepoort became its own city in 1977.
While the area is now part of the bustling Johannesburg metropolis, Roodepoort retains much of its more sedate charm. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, popular for its lush picnic space and the nesting home of two nesting African Black Eagles, is located there. While the atmosphere is relaxed in Roodepoort, there is still plenty of entertainment available. Monash University also calls Roodepoort its home, and the university carries with it many amenities of a university town. Accordingly, many restaurants, bars, clubs, coffee shops, galleries and stores have also made Roodepoort their home.
As part of a growing metropolis, Roodepoort is continuing to grow and develop, but not at the expense of its relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
